Belfast Castle and Cave Hill Country Park - About

Belfast Castle borders the highest point of the city that offers spectacular views.

Originally, the Castle was built in the city centre by the Normans in the 12th century. On 1611, the Baron of Belfast, Sir Arthur Chichester, constructed a second castle. However, it was burned down 100 years later.

A new castle was then built in the North of Belfast, by Marquis of Donegal, a descendant of the Chichester family, and it still stands on the same site.

The Castle was then passed on to Lord Ashely (the Earl of Shaftesbury) in 1884, when the Marquis died. Belfast Castle belonged to the family until 1934, after which it was donated to the City of Belfast.

Today it is used as a venue for weddings, conferences and other events. The building also has a restaurant which serves snacks, light refreshments, and lunch every day and the restaurant serves dinner on Tuesday to Saturday evenings until 9pm. To book a table at the Cellar Restaurant, call (028) 9037 0133.

At Cave Hill Country Park you will be able to enjoy relaxing walks with stunning scenery, archaeological sites, orienteering routes, an ecotrail, Cave Hill Adventurous Playground and its very own visitor centre (located inside Belfast Castle).

Cave Hill got its name from the five caves located on the side of the cliffs and one of its features, known as Napoleon’s Nose, is believed to be the inspiration for Gulliver’s Travels, a novel by Jonathan Swift.
