Crumlin Road Gaol - About

Crumlin Road Gaol was a prison from 1846 until 1996. Today it has been converted into a popular tourist attraction. You can now take a tour of the prison, understand how it works, explore each of the types of cells and conditions that people lived in, and learn about the history of the prison.

The prison can be known as Europe’s Alcatraz and has had some famous prisoners including Eamon De Valera, Ian Paisley, Martin McGuinness, Michael Stone and Bobby Sands.

Crumlin Road Gaol has had 17 executions. It is interesting to learn at the prison about how these hangings took place, and what you learn may come as a surprise!

If you have any interest in Irish History, then Crumlin Road Gaol is a must see.
